The pursuit of financial success and external expectations can lead to temporary success, but never leads to true fulfillment in life. Finding authenticity in meaningful work and genuine connections brings true happiness and purpose. By prioritizing what truly matters and staying true to oneself, one can create a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
The economy was booming in 2006, and I found myself caught up in the chase for financial success like many others in the industry.
Deals went so fast that there was little time to prioritize client-focused interactions. It was easy to make money during the bubble, but deep down, I knew it was unsustainable. I started to feel the pressure and the weight of external expectations, which only added to my unhappiness.
The turning point came when the bubble finally popped – amidst the unknowns surrounding the economy, I went through a divorce. It was an unhealthy relationship, and finally, I accepted that we needed to part ways.
When the money was no longer flowing in, I was able to see my value beyond that.
Much of my life revolved around other people’s expectations of me. But for the first time, I was able to focus on what I wanted. I took six months to seclude myself from the world and dig deep to understand why I was unhappy beyond the obvious external factors.
Over that period, I recognized the never-ending chase for volume and paychecks was a meaningless endeavor that I never found fulfilling. However, the financial struggles in my marriage compounded my stress and pushed me to focus almost exclusively on making ends-meet.
When I first entered the industry, it was about gaining trust and appreciation from clients and finding fulfillment in helping them make informed decisions. Somewhere along the way, as the market excelled rapidly, those values fell to the wayside.
To get back on track, I stepped away from the business for a while, focusing on personal growth and finding myself again. I needed to reconnect with my core values and prioritize what truly mattered. I returned to real estate with a renewed purpose, determined to work with clients on a personal level, one at a time, building relationships based on trust and genuine care.
I stopped chasing cold leads, and instead, I focused on providing the best service possible to my clients. I asked for honest feedback, not just for praise, but to learn and improve continually. It was no longer about chasing volumes of clients; it was about making each client experience exceptional.
As I rebuilt my career, I learned the importance of financial security, not as a means to achieve material success but to have the freedom to focus on what truly mattered to me. I cut down on expenses and sought fulfillment in meaningful work and authentic connections.
Now, many years later, I am proud of how far I've come. I've maintained a strong presence in the industry, but what matters most to me are the genuine connections I've built with my clients. It's not about the awards or accolades; it's about making a positive impact on people's lives. This journey has taught me the value of authenticity, honesty and genuine care for others.
It makes me proud that I was able to redirect my life. My daughter, Bella, is chasing her own dreams and forging her own path, never letting other people's expectations deter her. She is a singer, dancer and actor, studying at the American Musical and Dance Academy, and I am endlessly proud of her.
My incredible wife, Mary, has been a wonderful partner in this new chapter of my life. We enjoy sailing, scuba diving and traveling as often as possible. We also cherish our home life, spending time together and caring for our three dogs, Rumsford K. Wiggles Bottom III, the first of his name, Nemo and Indigo.
When it comes to real estate, I take a different approach from the norm. I'm not interested in chasing rankings or claiming to be the #1 agent in some narrowly defined category. Instead, I focus on what truly matters: client satisfaction. Honesty and delivering results are key to ensuring that. I firmly believe in the importance of being a good person, working with good people and being competent to protect others from harm or exploitation.
As a home geek, I spend a great deal of time analyzing market data so I can help my clients predict the most likely outcomes.
Being a certified instructor, I also enjoy teaching pre-license classes, sharing my experience, and guiding students to success.
My favorite part about real estate is the engagement and satisfaction that come from navigating unique and challenging deals. Each transaction is like solving a puzzle, and I take pride in finding the best solutions for my clients.
Sincerely,
